Los Angeles to Las Vegas by Private Car: Drive Time, Route and Tips
Los Angeles to Las Vegas is one of the most-traveled weekend trips in the West. It is about 270 miles door to door from central LA, and how you make the trip changes the whole weekend. Here is what to know.
The route
Almost every trip runs on the I-15 through the Cajon Pass, past Victorville and Barstow, across the Mojave Desert past Baker, and over the Nevada state line at Primm. From there it is about 40 minutes to the Las Vegas Strip.
How long does it take?
With normal traffic the drive takes four to five hours from Los Angeles. Two times are known for heavy traffic: Friday afternoons and evenings heading to Vegas, and Sunday afternoons heading back to LA, when the I-15 near the state line can back up for hours. Leaving early in the morning makes a big difference.
Driving, flying or a private car?
- Flying is about an hour in the air, but with the drive to the airport, security, boarding and the ride to your hotel, the trip often takes three to four hours anyway.
- Driving yourself means someone in the group spends eight or more hours of the weekend behind the wheel, plus hotel parking on the Strip.
- A private car takes you from your door in Los Angeles or Santa Clarita straight to your hotel. Nobody drives, nobody waits at an airport, and the price covers the whole vehicle.
Best for groups
Bachelor and bachelorette weekends, birthdays, conventions and concerts: our black GMC Yukon carries up to 6–7 passengers with luggage. Split between a full group, it compares well with several flights plus airport transfers.
Tips for the trip
- Bring water and snacks; services are sparse between Barstow and Primm.
- Plan your return for Sunday morning or Monday if you can.
- We can also pick you up from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) or your hotel for the ride home.
